Geo-Blocking: Location-Based Access Control
Geo-blocking prevents credential access from unexpected locations, protecting your organisation against compromised accounts being used from overseas.
How It Works
When geo-blocking is enabled for a user, Blinkr checks their login location against their registered home country. If the login comes from a different country, the request is blocked.
Home Country Detection
Each user's home country is automatically set on their first login based on their IP address. Admins can also set or change this manually.
Blocked Login Alerts
When a login is blocked, Blinkr sends an email alert to all organisation admins with the user's name, the blocked country, and a timestamp.
Activity Logging
All blocked attempts are recorded in your activity log as GEO_BLOCKED events, giving you a full audit trail.
Setting Up Geo-Blocking (Admins)
Geo-blocking has two levels: an organisation-wide master toggle and per-user settings.
Enable the master toggle
Go to Admin > Settings > Security Controls and turn on Geo-Blocking. This enables the feature organisation-wide but does not block anyone by itself.
Enable per user
Go to Admin > Users > [user name] and turn on Geo-Block Enabled. Blocking will start immediately for that user.
Travel Exemptions
If a team member needs to work while travelling, admins can grant a temporary travel exemption that suspends geo-blocking for that user.
How to Grant a Travel Exemption
- 1.Go to Admin > Users > [user name]
- 2.Turn on Travel Allowed
- 3.Choose a duration: 1 week, 2 weeks, or 1 month
- 4.The exemption expires automatically — no need to remember to revoke it
If You're Blocked
If you see a geo-blocking error when logging in via the extension:
- Your admin has already been notified by email.
- Contact your admin to request a travel exemption if you're travelling.
- If you're using a VPN, try disconnecting — the VPN may route through a different country.
- Your admin can check Admin > Users > [your name] to verify your home country.
